In recent times, the stock market has again witnessed a huge dip. In this, the main index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSEX, came down to 5 thousand 252 points. Why is the sudden downturn? It is said to be with the stock exchange analyst and Associate Professor of Economics Department of Dhaka University, Mr. Helal Uddin. Sujoy Mahajan interviewed
Prothom Alo: First you want to know about the evaluation of the recent situation in the stock market. Suddenly, a huge downturn and a reverberation - why are such incidents happening?
Mohammad Helal Uddin: If we take into consideration the basic issues of the stock market then there are logical reasons behind the rise or fall of the market. In these cases economic factors are the same, as well as political reasons. But we did not find any logical connection to the fundamental change that we saw in recent times in our market. Without a specific global and internal cause, when the price of all shares decreased and a significant fall in the index occurred, then it is understandable that the market is playing foul play or bad. Suddenly there was no economic, political reason behind the sudden decline in the market some days ago. In my opinion, this fall was totally motivated.
Prothom Alo: For the recent gesture, many are mentioning the reason for the election. Do you agree with that claim?
Mohammad Helal Uddin: The election will be held later this year, it is not a sudden decision. Many times we know the matter and the elections are coming up, it is also unknown to anyone. If there will be a downturn in the market around the election overnight? Rather I think that such large scale investment has suddenly become inactive in the market. In this case, there are big investors of the individual category, as well as institutional investors. Some of the members of the DSE will enter the market, and by selling the bond, the ICB will invest some money in the market. Those who decide on big investments in the market, naturally they want to buy shares at as low prices as possible. So, if the downturn happens, they gain. They can buy shares at a lower price. So, I think that there is a link to big investments in recent times.
